An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale has hit Afghanistan, near the border with Tajikistan and Pakistan. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 2.16 am local time on Monday. The epicentre in located 21 kilometres, or 14 miles, southwest of Ashkasham, a town in the Hindu Kush region. The town is 300 kms or 186 miles from the country`s capital Kabul.
The tremors were felt in northern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan and northern India. There have been no reports of casualties.
