The rates of tomatoes have come down in Chennai. Yesterday tomatoes were sold for Rs 25 per kilo in the Koyambedu wholesale market.

Tomatoes come from Hosur, Krishnagiri and other Tamil Nadu border areas in large numbers. Since there were heavy rains in these areas for the last two or three weeks, the plants flowers fell. The flowers never came up in tomatoes plants. Apart from this nobody ventured to pluck the tomatoes. Because of these reasons, the inflow of tomatoes became less. So on 16th of last month, tomatoes were sold for Rs 70 per kilo in Koyambedu and for Rs 100 in the retail shops.

So in order to keep the prices under control, the Tamil Nadu Government opened 50 temporary Pannai Pasumai shops. Tomatoes were sold for Rs 43 per kilo in these shops. At this juncture the prices have come down to Rs 25.

Speaking about the price of tomatoes, M Thiagarajan who is the president of Koyambedu Market Tomatoes merchants association said, during the heavy rains  only 30 loads of tomatoes came to the Koyambedu market. That is why the prices went up. For the last one week there were no rains. Hence 60 loads of tomatoes came from Krishnagiri and Andhra borders. Because of this prices have come down. Now tomatoes are sold for Rs 25 per kilo in the Koyambedu market.
