Public transport in Chennai

People have relied on the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) and the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to commute in the past two days. The Metro Transport Corporation (MTC), whose buses were working till recently, has been out of service in many areas. Many buses have been damaged.

An MTC official said, Despite a number of MTC buses being stranded in areas like T. Nagar and Mudichur, (we) have managed to restore services on all 769 routes in the city. While we have 709 regular routes, 60 routes are being operated as cut services due to water logging. Out of a fleet of around 3,800 buses, 3,113 are scheduled to run. We are still in the process of identifying buses that have been damaged in the floods.

In the meantime, the MRTS has added two additional night trains as of Sunday. An official from Southern Railway said, If necessary, we will run the night trains on Monday as well. Almost 20,000 more passengers were seen on the MRTS over the past two weeks.

CMRL services will commence at 5 am on Monday morning. Depending on the passenger inflow, there may be an extension of timings in the evenings as well. The regular timings for CMRL are 6 am to 10 pm.
