NASA has released an animation Map on the recent rains in Chennai city on 1st & 2nd December.
As per the data received from the satellite, the rainfall received in 30-minutes intervals has been recorded in this animation map.
NASA`s Goddard Space Flight Centre Scientists explained about the recent incessant heavy rains pounding Chennai. They informed that North-east Monsoon is the main reason for this heavy rain. A rainfall of 500 mm has been recorded in the southern coastal district. In the FPS, this rainfall is equivalent of 20 inches.
During the northeast monsoon season, wind blows from the the country`s north-east direction towards Southwest direction. This causes dehydration in the atmosphere and creates low pressure zones. Air enters this low pressure zone and absorbs all the evaporated water from the sea of Bay of Bengal and causes rainfall.
During this season, the coastal districts specially receive 50% to 60% of the rains.
