Incessant rain showers in Chennai has caused a huge loss of about Rs 70 lakh to vegetable retailers. As the conditions turning back to normalcy, price of veggies is getting back to normal ranges too.

About 250 to 280 tonnes of vegetables are received at Koyambedu from Tamil Nadu and other states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and other states. Of these, 75percent of the volume of vegetables is from other states.

Retailers from areas in Chennai such as Nungambakkam, Mylapore, Ambatur, T. Nagar, and other suburban areas counting to 64 daily markets source veggies from the Koyambedu market.

In the past few days, between 2nd and 10th of December, the total volume of veggies received was just between 80 and 150 tonnes which served to be the main cause for surge in price of veggies. Indispensable veggies like tomatoes, onions, beans, etc were among those that saw this rise in price. Following this, as rains have subsided, the regular volume of 250 tonnes of vegetable is received in the market.

This increase in volume received has brought down price of veggies. Marketers at the Koyabmedu market say they are receiving enough supply as rains have got reduced. Hence, their prices are also getting decreased. In the past twelve days when there were heavy showers, we faced a loss of Rs 70 lakh, he added.
