Schools start classes, teachers and students worry on how they will cope

Many schools resumed classes on Monday after a month long rain vacation. Many students attended classes sans their books, which many have lost to the floods.

Students were seen sharing their text books with friends. I don`t know how I would manage. I have to photocopy all my notes from my friends, said a student from a school on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai. She lives in Teynampet where there was up to 10 feet of water last week. Students in Class 12 have shown concern for their upcoming boards. They are without books or notes, and no consistent power supply at home. I don`t know how I will study for board exams. Often there are power cuts. The government should help. They should at least postpone public exams, says a student.

The government aided schools have been promised free books and uniforms by the State. Teachers worry about the loss of over 3 weeks of the academic session. (We) are also worried about how children will cope with their traumatic experiences. They don`t even want to talk about anything that they`ve lost everything. They are still scared. We are planning for counselling... (We assure) that the student will not be pressurised. We would work during the weekend. I wouldn`t punish them for this delay, they say.
