Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha released an audio message on Tuesday to the people of the state. The message went viral on social media and mobile messaging platforms.

In her message, she promised to rebuild the lives of those affected in the floods and to alleviate their sufferings. Ms. Jayalalitha introduced herself as the dear sister of the people. She said that efforts for the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of those affected had been taken up. (I have) no personal life and relatives and the people of the State were everything to me. I will bear your burdens. I have been working hard and have dedicated my entire life for you.for the sake of the one word Amma by which you call me, to the extent that I have forgotten the name Jayalalithaa given by my parents. The hands of this mother (herself) would wipe out all the sufferings of the people, she said.

The message comes amidst criticism that Ms. Jayalalitha has not visited the affected areas. She had visited some areas in Chennai during the first spell of rains, thereafter taking aerial surveys.
