The Chennai Corporation has decided to put animal waste to good use after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) bent pulled it up for inefficient disposal. A bio methanation plant will be set up to treat waste from slaughterhouses and generate power and organic manure. The houses in Villivakkam and Saidapet regenerate half a tonne of waste every day. The one at Perambur generates 8 tonnes a day.
A senior Corporation official said, We plan to have a plant at Perambur where all animal waste will be processed. There are similar plants set up across the country. According to data, a tonne of treated waste can produce 100 kg of organic manure or 100 units of electricity.
