Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced that on the occasion of Pongal, 12,624 buses will be operated from Chennai Koyambedu Bus Terminus to other districts and important towns and cities.
In a statement she has stated, Tamil Nadu people should celebrate Pongal festival in their native places. So Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation has decided to operate special buses on the occasion of Pongal. For the last four years, special buses are operated for Pongal. There was a good response amongst the people. This year also it has been ordered to run special buses on the occasion of Pongal.
4682 buses will be operated from Koyambedu terminus as follows:

On the whole, 12,624 buses will be operated from 9.1.2016 to 14.1. 2016.
The TNSTC will also operate the same number of special buses from January 15 to 19 for people returning from various places after the festivities.
In Chennai, about 600 MTC buses will be operated between January 14 and 18 for residents to visit popular hangout spots like Anna Square, Gandhi Mandapam, VGP, Muttukadu, Kovalam, Mamallapuram, the Vandalur zoo and the tourism fair at Island Grounds.
Tickets can be booked online for the special buses operated beyond 300km. The corporation will open 25 special counters at the CMBT for current reservation.
Anticipating trouble in the period when private bus operators are expected to charge more, the TNSTC has set up a helpline for people to lodge complaints. People can call 044-24794709 and lodge their complaints.
