Chennai Metro Rail officials have mentioned that the rail service between Meenambakkam and Little Mount will begin during the month of June.

There are two phases of work going on in CMRL at a cost of Rs 20 Thousand Crores. The first phase is between Washermanpet to Chennai Airport and second phase is between Chennai Central and St Thomas Mount.  Works are going on in rapid pace in many parts of Chennai.

The trial run and Little Mount to OTA took place few months ago. Now the trial run is to be extended up to Meenambakkam airport. Trains are operated at a speed of 30 kmph.

Metro Rail engineers are constantly checking the railway tracks and electrifications. If they are fully satisfied with this trial run, Metro Rail will write to Railway Safety Commissioner. In turn, Railway Safety Commissioner will inspect and give permission to start commercial operations.

The State government had announced sometime back that the stretch between Chennai airport and Little Mount would be launched in June 2016.

The first stretch of Chennai Metro Rail between Koyambedu and Alandur (10 km) was thrown open to public in the last week of June.
