MTC bus services have been hit because of the delay in opening the Korukkupet - Cochrane Basin Road railway overbridge (ROB). MTC bus services 44C, 2A, 13 A and 159 C were suspended in 2008 following the start of work on the 500 m long ROB. Poor coordination between departments, litigations and delay in shifting underground facilities have delayed the entire project.
Residents of Korukkupet have been using share autos till Basin Bridge and Mint to board buses. Some just walk. People living in the colonies of Jeeva Nagar, Meenambal Nagar, Sathya Murthy Nagar, JJ Nagar and Anna Nagar have been especially hit. Share autos are always congested and charge up to Rs. 10 one way, which is not affordable for several students in the nearby corporation schools. Students can travel for free in MTC buses using passes once the bus services are resumed... I was in Class 10 when they discontinued MTC bus services and they are yet to resume it even though I have completed my graduation. We have been struggling due to lack of public transport. We hope authorities restore the bus services without any delay... The corporation appears to have reduced the width from the actual plan to complete before the assembly election. The railings along the fly over is also appears to be substandard. There will be more container movements through the new ROB, they say.
In response to this, a corporation official said, We are yet to get any notification from the government about the date of inauguration. But we have completed all the work... (We) will consider resuming MTC buses after the inauguration.
