A study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour and Social Networking has said that uploading more selfies on social media affects your love life. The study was conducted by researchers at the Florida State University.
According to the researchers, the more selfies a person posts on Instagram, the more likelihood that he or she will have a rocky relationship. They say, The results show that body image satisfaction can be detrimental to Instagram users romantic relationships, especially when users body image satisfaction is promoted in the form of Instagram selfie posts.
They studied and surveyed 420 Instagram users between the ages of 18 and 62. They found that those who thought themselves good looking, or had a better body image, posted more selfies than others. However, they also found that these people had conflicts in their relationships. The researchers said that Instagram related conflict was instigated by jealousy, and that the arguments were based on selfie posting behaviour.
Say the researchers, The results from this study provide an avenue for future body image research. The findings contribute to a growing body of scholarly literature that has examined the predictors and consequences associated with using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. For instance, future research could examine whether social media users post images of their actual selves or their virtual ideal selves, and whether such online behaviours are associated with similar negative outcomes found in our study.
