A diabetes research centre in Chennai is now working with CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) schools to follow the Comprehensive School Health Manual. This manual was released by the CBSE almost a decade ago. It was compiled with the backing of WHO (World Health Organisation) and recommends a plan that has better nutrition and increased activity.

The centre, which is located in Royapuram, conducted a study that included 1357 students. These were from Class 3, 7 and 11 in 7 CBSE schools in the city. They found that following the health for just one year reduced lower hip and waist circumferences, body fat percentage and calorie intake. The study was conducted between 2011 and 2013.

Those children who were on the intervention programme had a reduced daily calorie intake by 465 calories, reduced waist circumference by .4 cm, reduced hip circumference by 2.2cm and reduced body fat by 1.8 percent.

Speaking about this, a senior doctor from the centre said, All we did was dust out the manual that was sitting unused in the libraries of these schools and train teachers to follow the plan.

The senior doctor said, We had psychologists, physiotherapists, nutritionists and doctors train the teachers so they could implement the manual more effectively. (We have) plans to extend the exercise to more than 100 schools in the city.
