The project of constructing a flyover at the Vadapalani intersection was take up in order to ease the heavy traffic congestion.
The project has been in progress for the last few years and has been rather slow. In fact, the project was mooted as early as 2005-6. Immediate approval was given by the state government. However, the project commenced late owing to the plans of Chennai Metro Rail construction in the area. The construction of Chennai Metro Rail stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur started in 2011. The construction began in 2014.
The latest news is that Vadapalani flyover may be ready for operation in 3 months.
The officials informed that the progress of the project was smooth and they will hand it over to the highway department, However, a small quantum of work is still to be completed which is to be taken care of by the Highways department.
This flyover at the intersection of Arcot Road and Inner Ring Road is built at a cost of Rs. 69 crore. Of this, the Highways Department had deposited Rs. 30 crore with Chennai Metro Rail for construction of the flyover. This is located close to the Vadapalani Metro Rail station.
