A recent report by intelligence firm Sensor Tower has said that mobile apps are growing and, of these, a major chunk belongs to gaming apps.
According to the report, 17.2 billion apps were downloaded in the first quarter. The apps are from the iOS and Android stores. The new figure is a 8.2 percent increase compared to 2015. Of the 17.2 billion, 1.95 billion were from the Apple App Store and 4.7 billion from Google Play Store. An estimate of $34.8 billion annually is the estimated worth of the global gaming industry.
Says the report, This continued growth is a positive sign for developers and publishers who have turned gaming on smart devices into a lucrative business. Clash Royale is on pace to generate $1 billion this year, but it isn`t alone. You can expect Supercell`s Clash of Clans to likely do the same. The suite of Candy Crush releases from King should likely surpass that massive milestone as well.
iOS`s gaming category is growing compared to Android, but Android is still ahead in terms of number of downloads. The report says that the gaming section in the Apple App Store has grown by 14 percent year on year, compared to less than 1 percent in the Google Play Store.
The most popular companies are Electronic Arts (EA) and King (makers of Candy Crush). The most downloaded games are Piano Tiles, Candy Crush, Subway Surfers and Clash of Titans.
