Security deposits for contesting Parliament & Assembly elections

Rs. 25000/- is required as a security deposit to contest in parliamentary elections.

The Section 34 1 (a) of R. P. Act, 1951 stipulates that every candidate is required to make a security deposit of Rs. 25,000/- for Lok Sabha elections.

If the contesting candidate belongs to Scheduled caste and Scheduled Tribe, the same section 34 of R. P. Act, 1951 provides that they need to make a security deposit of Rs. 12,500.

Similarly, Rs. 10000/-is required as Security Deposit for contesting in the State Legislative Assembly elections.

Section 34 (1) (b) of the R. P. Act 1951 stipulates that a general candidate for contesting an Assembly election will have to make a security deposit of Rs. 10,000/-. A candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste / Tribe will have to make a security deposit of Rs. 5,000/-.
