On Thursday 5th May a superfast express collided sideways with suburban train. All the trains from Chennai to Arakkonam and Arakkonam to Chennai were cancelled putting all the passengers to lurch. Senior railway officers, including the Southern Railway General Manager, visited the spot and held enquiries. Two compartments of the local train suffered structural damage in the impact.
The accident took place in Pattabiram at about 8.15 PM. The railway tracks were restored by 9.30 PM and the traffic was opened.
7 passengers were injured and they were treated in the military hospital. At the Chennai Central railway station, all express trains bound for Arakonam and Katpadi were delayed. After one line was cleared around 10 25 pm, the Chennai Mangalore Mail, which was to have departed originally at 8.20 pm, left the station
