Peaceful elections in the State, 73 percent turnout

Tamil Nadu recorded around 73.76 percent turnout for the State Assembly polls on Monday. The elections were held for 232 constituencies across the State. Voting for two segment - Aravukuruchi and Thanjavur - have been postponed to May 23 due to allegations of distribution of money for votes. The turnout on Monday is lower than the polls five years ago, which was at around 78.2 percent.

The maximum turnouts of 88.5 percent and 87.61 percent respectively was in Palakod and Pennagaram in Dharmapuri district. The lowest was at 55.27 percent in Chennai’s Harbour constituency. 

Chennai city recorded around 62 percent turnout at the polls. This is a 5-6 percent decrease when compared to the 2011 elections. Normal life prevailed in the city. The Election Commission declared the state elections as peaceful. Speaking about this, a senior official said, Central Chennai with Harbour, Villivakkam and Egmore Assembly constituencies recorded the lowest polling numbers. Dharmapuri and Salem with more rural pockets recorded the highest polling while urban areas comprising tier-1and tier-2 cities recorded low polling. The highest turnout was recorded in Edappadi and Pennagaram constituencies (85 percent) while the lowest was in Harbour (55 percent) and Villivakkam (53 percent).
