Potassium bromate and potassium iodate are being used in the manufacture of bakery products like bread, bun, etc. Shockingly, it is found that these chemicals are cancer causing. In fact, these chemicals are banned products in a few countries. Hence the produces made by renowned brands were subjected to test by the central environmental science center. This involved testing products of over 38 brands. In this test, it was found that nearly 84 percent of the products tested contained these chemicals. This had put all the researchers and everyone awestruck. Following this, there were objections to ban the use of these chemicals.

Agreeing to this, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has imposed ban on potassium bromate in preparing bakery products.

Speaking about this, the chief executive officer of the authority, Mr. Praveen Kumar said that they have issued a notice banning the use of potassium bromate. With regards to potassium iodate, we have forwarded a note to the research team. They will take a call regarding its use. To note, potassium iodate is used when the dough is prepared from wheat flour.
