15 Lakhs women treated in the last 5 years at CEmONC centres: Tamil Nadu Government

The Tamil Nadu Government has mentioned that 15 Lakhs women have been treated at 126 CEmONC centres during the last 5 years.
During the year 2005, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had inaugurated Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) centres in Tamil Nadu. This has been functioning very efficiently for the last five years. These centres are now functioning in 126 centres including 22 medical colleges.
CEmONC centres were started across the State with the aim of reducing infant and maternal mortality. They were set up with round-the-clock emergency care for pregnant women and newborn, mainly at Taluk-level government hospitals, so that patients need not travel more.
508 specialty doctors’ posts and 582 nurse’s posts were created exclusively for these CEmONC centres. CEmONC centres have been built at a cost of Rs 226 Crores 50 Lakhs.
The CEmONC centres have been retrofitted with state of the art theatres, blood banks and other equipment. The equipments have been procured at a cost of Rs 59 Crores 63 Lakhs. The operation theatres are fitted with world’s best oxygen equipments.
Skill training has been given to 1416 doctors and 3009 nurses. Because of this, death rate of women has come down. There is 23 percentage increases in the usage of CEmONC centres in the last 3 years.
Treatments on par with foreign countries have been given to 15 lakhs women during the last 5 years. 108 ambulance services play a big role in bringing pregnant women to the centres. There is Renaissance in gynecology because a close relative has been permitted during the delivery time.
The maternal death rate is relatively very low in Tamil Nadu when compared to other States. The reason for this is CEmONC centres.
