CM Jayalalitha to kick-start metro rail extension

Metro rail works are being carried out to largely reduce traffic congestion in the city. These are being laid in 2 routes. The first one is between Vannarapettai and Chennai Airport covering a stretch of 23.05 km. The second route is between St. Thomas Mount and Chennai Central covering 22.50 km.
 
To start with, metro rail tracks between Koyambedu and Alandur for 10km stretch got completed and the services were launched last year. Chief Minister Jayalalitha inaugurated metro rail services here.
 
Works to lay metro rail routes and stations are being carried out now. These works between Chennai airport and Alandur are now done and transportation in this route is likely to begin. Construction of subway between Thirumangalam and Egmore for 7.25 km is done. The metro rail construction between Koyambedu and Shenoy Nagar are over and test run took place. Construction of the same between Chennai Central and Egmore are being carried out now.
 
The metro rail services are likely to get extended from Vannarapettai to Wimco Nagar in Thiruvottiyur along 9km stretch. The central ministry had agreed for the same. This extension is to be done at a cost of Rs 3,770 crore. Land acquisition works are being carried out for the same. A Pooja for these works will be done at Thandayarpet Port Trust ground on Saturday, the 23rd at 11 a.m. The construction will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Jayalalitha. This will also see participation by the union minister of urban development, housing and urban poverty alleviation, Venkaiya Naidu.
 
The contractor ought to finish the construction between Vannarapettai and Wimco Nagar in two years. This metro rail route will have 8 railway stations of which there will be 2 subways. As the first step, the two subways will be firstly constructed.
