20 lakh beneficiaries for free Wi-Fi in railway stations

Google has joined hands with RailTel and is providing free Wi-Fi facility in major railway stations. The Chief Executive Officer of Google, Sundar Pichai says with pride that the 3G facility benefits over 20 lakh commuters.

While speaking among a gathering of all investors, Sundar Pichai said Google, together with Indian Railways and RailTel will offer high speed wireless internet facility to lakhs of commuters.
 
The facility is so far available with the major railway stations in India. About 20 lakh travelers are being benefitted out of this. There is 15 percent higher download done at the railway stations as compared to allowed limit.

Indian railways, together with RailTel offer Wi-Fi facility in 23 railway stations. Railway stations including those in Mumbai Central, Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Ranchi, Raipur, Kacheguda, Ernakulam junction, Visakapatnam, Patna, Jaipur, Guwahati, Allahabad, Ujjain, Chennai Central, Pune, etc. Under this scheme, free Wi-Fi facility is to be available in more than 100 railway stations.

India has more than 34 crore internet users. Most of these users access web using mobile phones. There are 9 crore users with Airtel, 6 crore with Vodafone, 4 crore with Idea, 3 crore with Reliance, and 3 crore with government run BSNL.
