Chennai Corporation decision: 30 more Amma canteens in Chennai city

One of the dream projects of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Amma canteens have been started in all major cities in the state including Chennai and has been a roaring success.

Amma canteens are a boon, especially for those who visit Chennai for some work. There has been a demand for increasing the number of Amma canteens in the city. This has been taken up for consideration.

In the meeting conducted by Chennai Corporation yesterday (Sunday, 31st July), Mayor Saidai Duraiswamy announced that 30 more Amma canteens will be opened in Chennai city.

Further, 52 more decisions were ratified during the meeting. The important decisions:

Chennai Corporation is to be extended in 30 more places. Places are being selected and related work has been in progress.

Amma drinking water purification scheme is being implemented in the Chennai Corporation-administered urban areas.This scheme, offering the free drinking water to the poor and economically backward families, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on 13th February 2016.

In the 1st phase, the free distribution of purified drinking was arranged in 20 places where predominantly the poor and economically backward resided. Under the scheme, 20 litres of purified drinking water is given to each family daily.Each purification centre purifies 2000 to 4000 litres of water per hour.

The scheme is being extended to another 30 places in the city. The locations are being selected and work is in progress.

The cost of the purification plants is Rs. 9.6040 Crores. The fund has been allotted and granted.

The property tax relief will be given to ancient memorials and buildings coming under the Greater Chennai corporation domain.The ward officers have been authorized to extend this property tax relief.

Some activities, including the maintenance of parks in the city are being handed over to private agencies.
