Phase II of CMRL at a cost of Rs 44,000 crore

The phase I of the CMRL project covers 45 km of the city that extends from Washermanpet to Chennai airport (23 km) and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount (22 km). The cost of the Phase I project is Rs. 20200 crore. Of this, only 10 km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur has been launched.
 
Work is going on at various places of Phase 1 project.
 
At this juncture, Preliminary works for the phase II project of Chennai Metro Rail are under way. Officials conducted a site visit, recently, to finalize the location of stations. Chennai Metro Rail plans on expanding the network to 88 km at a cost of about Rs. 44,000 crore.
 
There will be three corridors in the phase 2 project. The three corridors include Madhavaram to Siruseri (41km), Nerkundram to Light House (14km) and Madhavaram to Perumbakkam (33km).
 
In the Madhavaram to Siruseri corridor it connects important centers like Moolakadai, Perambur, Purasawalkam, Kilpauk Medical College (KMC), Anna Flyover, LUZ, Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, Perungudi, Karappakam, Sholinganallur, and Naavalur.
 
The second corridor covers CMBT to Light House.
 
In the third corridor from Moolakadai to Sholinganallur SIPCOT, it connects Villivakkam, Ambattur Industrial Estate, Nerkundram, Ramapuram, OTA and Medavakkam.
