The weather experts are of the opinion that the main reason for the higher temperatures in this year is the climate change.
The impact of heat has been more intense in some districts, including Villupuram has been higher in the last few days.
The temperature in Villupuram district has been registered at near 100 degrees Fahrenheit over the last 3 days. On Wednesday (11th August), it was 99.32 Fahrenheit. On Tuesday (10th August) and Thursday (12th August) it was 98.24 Fahrenheit.
The Director of the Chennai Meteorological Centre. Mr. Balachandran explained that the intensity of the southwest monsoon has decreased, clouds are less and hence, the sun’s rays fall directly on the earth. This has led to higher temperatures. The natural movement of the air is from the lower level to upper level. However, presently, the air movement is from upper levels to lower levels. This has led to sultry weather, especially during night times. The sultriness will reduce if the moist sea breeze sets in during the night in the coastal regions. However, it will continue to be sultry in the interior regions. This trend is likely to continue till 15th August.Th southwest monsoon will be from June to September.
The director of Annamalai University Climate Research and Information Centre, Mr. Pazhanivelu, explained that generally, there has been changes in climate conditions like heavy rainfall and more intense heat. Because of this, there were heavy rains in areas like Cuddalore and Chennai towards the end of last year.
Following the heavy rains, the summer season started earlier than usual. This is mainly due to global warming.
With the growth of industry, the green gas level has increased from 270 ppm (parts per million) to 406 ppm in the last 10 years. This is the primary reason for climate change leading to heavy rains and higher temperatures. It is essential to reduce the carbon-di-oxide and methane emissions in order prevent this climate change.
If global warming continues to rise, it is estimated that there may be an increase in the average temperature of 2 degrees to 3 degrees Celsius during the year 2100. This will be a very harmful situation for all living creatures on earth.
