Reports have said that search giant Google has started working towards developing a standalone operating system which has no links with Android or Chrome OS. According to the reports, the project, dubbed Fuchsia, is the name of a flower and gives the name of a colour. The project has been described as: Pink + Purple = Fuchsia, a new operating system.
Speculations are that the new OS is to be destined for the IoT market. The project uses a custom kernel called Magenta, based on LittleKernel - a project designed for embedded systems, especially IoT devices. The project makes sense as Google has several IoT products in the market including OnHub and Google Home. However, it is not only for IoT platforms and can also run on other types of platforms such as smartphones, tablets, and regular PCs. Also discussions in Fuchsia’s IRC channel indicated that the company will soon add Raspberry Pi3 support as well.
