A grand musical performance at the Music Academy on Friday will kickstart ‘Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities’, a 15-month program organised by the German Foreign Office to mark the ‘Year of Germany in India’ celebrations in Chennai, said Stefan Weckbach, Consul General of Germany.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, Weckbach said the celebrations would commemorate completion of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Events would take place in seven cities and the same gesture would be reciprocated by the Indian government when it would celebrate the year of India in Germany next year, he said.

Elaborating on the cultural and political ties between the two countries, Weckbach said India was one of the first countries to recognise the Federal Republic of Germany in March 1951. Fruitful collaboration has been demonstrated and the relationship has subsequently reached a strategic level with the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel to India.
