Enjoying rain in Chennai? You can enjoy for a few more days too as parts of the city are likely to experience heavy downpour with thundershowers in the evening till Sunday. The thunderstorm intensity is however unpredictable, say sources from the meteorological department. On Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded 7 cm rainfall.

The highest rainfall was recorded in Cholavaram with 8cm rainfall in the past 24 hours. Red hills saw 7cm rainfall, Sriperumbudur 6cm, and Chembarambakkam and Guindy 4cm each. Meenambakkam received just 3cm rainfall.

As far as the reservoirs in Chennai are concerned, the Poondi, Cholavaram and Red hills received rain showers only to cope with dwindling evaporation loss. It was only the Chembarambakkam reservoir that got considerable inflow.

Elements including persistent upper air circulation above Lakshadweep have largely influenced thunderstorms, say meteorological officials.

The director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre S. Balachandran says it is difficult for them to predict thunderstorms in September and October months. The maximum temperature recorded was 34 degree Celsius on Friday. Tamil Nadu will probably receive rain showers in a few more areas. Evening or night showers is likely in Chennai. And the maximum temperature in the city will be around 36 Celsius.
