Elumbur is among the key places in Chennai, located towards the north of Cooum river. It serves as one of the centres to trading and transportation. In fact, the story behind Elumbur turned into Egmore is unknown to most Chennaites even. There is an interesting reason behind the name transfer.
Kulothunga Chola 1 - according to history, Elumbur was under the control of Kulothunga Chola. Elumbur has been the administrative capital during Kulothunga Chola 1’s period. It was this region that later turned into Egmore.
Nellore Chola inscriptions - The inscriptions of Nellor Chola king, Vijaya Gopal belonging to the year 1264 states that Elumbur – Tudarmuni Nadu was present in Puzhal Kottam village.
In the Sriranganadha Yadhavaraya inscriptions, residents of (present day Chetpet) then Elumbur - Thudarmuni are believed to have paid subsidies. Elumbur is among the regions that fell under the East India Company since 1720. During their period, the British men converted the name Elumbur into their slang and called it Egmore. Since then, the name Egmore is in practice without even knowing the actual reason behind the name.
