Central government contemplates an entrance test for admission in Central Universities

The central government is seriously contemplating the introduction of a common entrance test for admission to the central universities (about 40).

The common entrance test for admission to the medical colleges throughout the country will be started from this year. Following this, the central government has decided to analyse the possibilities of conducting a similar common entrance test for admission to the central universities.

Currently, admission to the central universities in Haryana, Jammu-Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu is done through a national entrance test. Apart from this, the other universities conduct separate admission tests to join their courses offered.

However, Delhi University follows the system of admission based on the marks obtained in +2 examinations. The ‘cut-off’ marks for some specified courses is fixed at 100 percent. Because of this, even students who got 95 percent marks in +2 examinations cannot get admission.

The analysis for conducting a common entrance is being carried out to prevent the above-mentioned problems. The Ministry of Human Welfare and Development has been conducting a series of meetings with the relevant state and central personnel.

The minister for Human Resources and development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar has informed that this issue will be discussed during the Vice-Chancellors’ meeting to be held on 6th October.

The experts opine that with the introduction of a common entrance test, the students will have to encounter the double difficulty of writing the +2 examinations immediately followed by the common entrance test which will cause undue stress. This scenario may allow the tuition/coaching centres throughout the country to prosper.

In the prevailing condition, some central universities and other universities have already been conducting an entrance test. With the introduction of a common entrance test, the students will not need to apply for these tests. Also, the meritorious students will definitely get admission.

Currently, Delhi University offers admission based on the marks obtained in +2 examinations. The hugely popular Sri Ram College under the Delhi University offered admission to 188 students this year. Out of this, 129 students belonged to Tamil Nadu. Though the admission is strictly based on the marks obtained in +2 examinations, this has amazed the educationists.

There is an observation that while correcting the answer sheets, marks are given liberally in order to enable admission. This will cause the problem of really meritorious students failing to get admissions. This is the reason why the central government is now contemplating on a common entrance test.
