Salem, Madurai, Thanjavur, and Vellore, all cities in the state of Tamil Nadu, are included in the list of smart cities prepared as per the Central Government’s Urban Infrastructure Development Project.
This was disclosed by the Central Minister for Urban Development, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu.
After the BJP government was formed in the centre under the leadership of Mr. Narendra Modi, the Smart City Plan was introduced as a measure towards urban infrastructure development.
Accordingly, cities were to be selected considering several aspects and stiff competition. Many cities were already announced in the list. The 3rd list was released today (Tuesday, 20th September).
67 cities from 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra, and Punjab. 27 cities have been selected.
The minister informed that Salem, Madurai, Thanjavur, Vellore, Tirupathi, Mangaluru, Amritsar, and Gwalior are included in this list.
The new Smart cities list announced by the Centre:
Agra, Ajmer, Amritsar, Aurangabad, Gwalior, Hubli-Dharwad, Jalandhar, Kalyan-Dombiwali, Kanpur, Kohima, Kota, Madurai, Mangaluru, Nagpur, Namchi, Nashik, Rourkela, Salem, Shivamogga, Thane, Thanjavur, Tirupati, Tumakuru, Ujjain, Vadodara, Varanasi, Vellore.
