According to sources from the finance ministry, it is understood that the centre is in serious discussions about beginning banking services at 5.5 lakh ration shops present across the country.
We are planning to launch banking services at ration shops functioning under public distribution system. With this, people can gain access to their bank account at ration shops, say officials.
The ration shops will serve as banking agents. To start with, this scheme is likely to be introduced in over 55,000 ration shops.
All the ration shops are functional under the state government. Sugar, rice, wheat, kerosene, etc are distributed here. These are offered at subsidized price according to food safety and standards authority of India.
Aadhar details inclusion
About 1.5 lakh ration shops are functioning using machines. Consumer details are sourced through these machines and products are distributed. It is possible to link Aadhar card details with this. The process requires easy-to-use software and hardware. With these devices, the bank account can be linked.
There are more number of ration shops as compared to post offices. There is a ration shop for every village or town with population over 1000. Hence the scheme can be introduced with ease.
