TANGEDCO is taking serious precautionary measures to cope up with north east monsoon rains. It has been ordered to repair the damaged electric poles and also elevate the electric connection box offices laying the low areas by end of this month.
The continuous rains during last December submerged the Chennai city and its suburbs. Because of this the general public was subjected to great hardship. There was power cut for a week’s time in many places. The reason for this was damaged electric poles and electric connection boxes were submerged in water. Apart from this the electric wires were severed and transformers were damaged.
At this juncture, there will be monsoon rains from coming October to December. Hence TANGEDCO is taking serious precautionary measures to cope up with north east monsoon rains. An official of the TANGEDCO said: During heavy rain in Chennai last year, the people suffered from the power cut. The sub stations at Guindy, Tharamani, Velacherry, Madipakkam and Thiruvanmiyur were surrounded with rain water.
Because of this power distributions were affected. Moreover majority of electric poles carrying supply lines were damaged. Similarly electric wires were severed in sub urban areas. In order to prevent such incidents during this monsoon season, various actions are being taken. Damaged electric poles are being replaced. So far 500 electrical posts have been replaced. Similarly, the electric connection box offices laying the low areas have been elevated. In order to prevent water entering the sub stations, a protective wall is being built around. The executive engineers have been asked to complete the entire work by end of this month.
