Contact lens for testing glucose levels

Here comes a new technology for testing your glucose level in a non-invasive manner. This method makes use of contact lens and tests your tear samples. The most generic method in use for glucose level check is blood test, say researchers. So far, there is not any non-invasive method, says WeiChuan Shih, University of Houston, the US.

Glucose is a fair way of optical sensing, in particular, for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy, according to Shih who has developed the project in association with colleagues at UH, and Korea.

It is a new approach unlike the noninvasive glucose sensor that functions using Raman spectroscopy, as developed by Shih when he was pursuing his PhD at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In this method, small molecular samples are tested with the use of a tiny device. This is built from gold nanowires placed above gold films. It is produced with solvent assisted Nano transfer printing.

This device creates narrow gaps inside the nanostructure, and enhances the sensing properties. This will in turn intensify Raman signals, say researchers. The concept contact lens is not very new to us as Google has already submitted patent for multi-sensor contact lens which will have many other applications as well.
