Dussehra is a ten day long festival including fasting, rituals, celebrations and more all of which are celebrations for Lord Rama’s victory in defeating Demon Ravana. On the other hand, the festival also indicates the victory of Goddess Durga against Mahishasura. It is believed that Durga fought against the demon for ten days and nine nights. The festival is on the whole a celebration of the success of the good in fighting the evil.

There are various rituals followed in different parts of India, though it falls on the same day all over. Dussehra is the tenth day of the Navarathri festival. Burning of effigies of Ravana is among the major practices followed on this day.

The day is also referred to as Vijaya Dasami or Ayuda Pooja. It was on this day that the lord Rama won over Ravana. Vijaya Dasami is considered very auspicious.

Dussehra falls on any day between September and October. In the ongoing year 2016, the festival falls on 11th October.

In northern parts of our country, there prevails a practice of planting barley in earthen pots on the very first day of Navarathri. These grow up during the period of Navarathri and on the ninth day, the grown up plants are used for luck. Men keep it behind ears or on hat. On the other hand, in southern India, Golu is practiced. In Golu, stacks of beautiful dolls and idols are arranged in themes and bright lights and arranged to worship lord Durga.
