A good harvest has brought down the prices of vegetable and fruits. Tomatoes now cost as low as Rs. 15 per kg. Cold crops such as guavas are now being sold for Rs 40 per kg at the Koyambedu wholesale market.
According to traders, The prices had been dropping for the past few days at the Koyambedu market. With Diwali round the corner, people were buying vegetables in large quantities. Added to this, the increase in yield too has contributed to the drop in prices. An advisor to the Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association says, The prices are bound to fluctuate depending on the sales. The delta regions are suffering from drought due to shortage of Cauvery water and farmers have stopped cultivating long term crops like paddy and turmeric. They are now looking at cultivating short term crops such as tomato, onions and other vegetables. With the rich yield, the prices could drop further.
Chennai gets its share of tomatoes, beans, carrots, cabbages and cauliflower from Karnataka, while a large quantity of coconut, lime and raw banana and other veggies makes its way to Bengaluru from Chennai.
