The face of the nation’s two of the largest premier institutions including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are likely to get changed as they are to migrate beyond their respective areas of specialization that are management and technology. Further, increased student admission will also be encouraged.

The present status of both IIMs and IITs is that the two fall under national importance. These are now set to turn into deemed universities. To note, it was Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister who announced this plan during the annual budget this year.

The necessary works are now in progress. These require legislative changes. During the beginning of October month, a draft policy in this regard got released from the Human Resource Development (HRD) and requested for comments.

The guidelines mentioned in the draft stated that these institutions stand responsible of satisfying a set of criteria that fall under pre-determined time frame since the notification date. The institutions must turn into multidisciplinary ones and should focus both on teaching as well as research of extraordinarily high quality.

Prakash Javadekar, the HRD minister requested both IITs and IIMs in separate meetings to get prepared and bid for world class institution.
