Several public and private sector banks have recalled or blocked the compromised cards and are in the process of collating data to estimate the financial  losses, if any, to customers due to any fraud after a security breach caused by a virus or malware has impacted million debit cards.

The suspected security breach allegedly happened through a malware in the systems of Hitachi Payment Services, which serves the ATM network of Yes Bank.

Hitachi provides payment services through ATM services, point of sale services, emerging payments services and banking channel products like cash recycling ATMs and auto passbook entry machines.

There are around 60 crore debit cards operational in India, of which 19 crore are indigenously developed RuPay cards while the rest are Visa and MasterCard enabled.

The banks have also advised customers to immediately change their Automated Teller Machine (ATM) Personal Identification Number (PIN). The affected debit cards include Visa, MasterCard and RuPay.
