The city has been generally cool owing to land breeze from the northern parts of the country. On Sunday, the maximum temperature was 30.6 degrees Celsius.
Officials from the Regional Meteorological Department in Chennai say, The drop in temperature is set to last for another week as the northeast monsoon is likely to remain inactive until then. There is currently greatest prevalence of the northerly winds over the easterlies. This is causing the temperature to dip. Satellite images suggest some amount of clouding over various parts of Tamil Nadu during the night, but not enough to bring rainfall. Clouding during the night will trap heat escaping from the earth surface and keep the night temperature high. Even moisture in the atmosphere acts as clouds in trapping heat.
