Before bidding bye to the year 2016, let us take time to rewind the year and chew some of the memorable happenings – good or bad, either of them here.
12th December - Cyclone Vardah
All the schools and businesses remained closed and the airport services suspended as the Chennai city experienced cyclone with severe landfall along with very heavy downpour and winds up to 140km/h. The fishermen of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu were told not to venture into the sea. Disaster management teams were deployed to evacuate over 15,000 people in low-lying areas.
December 5 - The Iron Lady of India, CM Jayalalitha took her last breath
On the night of 22nd September, Jayalalitha got admitted in Apollo hospital with complaints of dehydration and fever. This seemed fair, and was promising that the CM will be back, turning hale and healthy again, however things did not turn get better even as days passed. The hospital authorities stated that she was suffering out of pulmonary infection and Septicemia both were however solved. On 4th December, unexpectedly, there came an announcement that the CM is in critical state and was said to be kept under crucial treatments and monitoring. The treatments however failed and the CM took her last breath on the night of 5th December at 11.30 pm.
November 8 - Demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes
The announcement came as a nightmare to the people of lower and middle income group, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to be of no value henceforth on the night of 8th November. These notes belonging to the Mahatma Gandhi series became invalid from the midnight of that day and further, it was stated that new notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denominations will be issued as replacement to the old notes.
21st September - Metro services between Chennai Airport and Little Mount station
The Chennai Metro Rail service had made one more launch connecting its service with St. Thomas Mount starting on Friday morning. The first service of the train will start from Koyambedu at 6 a.m. The first connection was made between Koyambedu and Alandur for price Rs 40, to note.
10th September - Gold medal in Paralympics
Indian Paralympics high jumper, Mariyappan Thangavelu took part in Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro and in the men`s high jump T-42 category, he had won the Gold medal in the finale. He is notably the very first champion to win the gold medal in Paralympics since 2004.
5th September - Reliance Jio got launched
Reliance Jio made the launch of its Jio 4G SIM cards. The SIM cards started being available at all outlets across India. There was a long trial run made where only select users used the Jio network following which it was officially launched on 5th September 2016. All Jio services were initially announced to be free until 31st December and later announced to extend the free offerings until March 2016.
22nd July - Kabali release
The film Kabali starring Rajinikanth and Radhika Apte in the lead role got released on 22nd July 2016. The film was directed by Madras fame Pa. Ranjith and music scores were by Santosh Narayan. While the superstar had been working on movies that enhanced his stardom with stunning roles.
19th May - Consecutive winning of CM elections
After the demise of MGR, it t is for the second time that a political party had won the election for two consecutive times. The AIADMK party won the election under the leadership of late former CM of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalitha.
