Traditionally, during the Pongal holiday festival when 3 to 4 successive holidays are available, large number people flock to visit all tourist spots. Arignar Anna Zoological Park is one of the most favourite spots. The crowd would exceed over 1.5 Lakh people. The zoo officials used to make all necessary arrangements a few weeks before the holidays for a large number of visitors.
However, this year, with the severe damage caused by the cyclone Varda, repair works have been taken up. Though the target was to complete the activities before Pongal, it could not be accomplished. Hence, no special arrangements have been made in the zoological park.
In the prevailing condition, it is not feasible to make the zoo ready as only 3 days remain for Kaanum Pongal.
When enquiring about this, a zoo official explained:
During the Varda cyclone, thousand of trees were uprooted in the zoo area. The repair work is in progress and will require some more time for completion. Allowing people in such a stage is liable for the public to face a lot of inconveniences. So, it was decided not to keep the zoo open for the public during the Pongal holidays. He told that it may take another 10 days for the repair works to be completed.
