Every month on the new moon day the Oonjal Utsavam (swing festival) will be held at Melmalayanur Angalamman temple in Villupuram District. Gingee civil court has stayed this festival. Thousands of devotees from Tamil Nadu will throng to Melmalayanur Angalamman temple to participate in this festival.

At this juncture Gnanavel and Ashok from Melmalayanur filed a public litigation at the Gingee civil court. In that petition it has been mentioned: There is lack of public amenities including poor hygiene and police bandobust. Neither the temple authorities nor the district authorities provide the basic amenities. In view of this, it is requested to stay the temple festival and Oonjal Utsavam. Assistant commissioner, The Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department has been cited as the respondent.

When the petition came before the judge Venkatesan of Gingee civil court, the judge stayed the Oonjal Utsavam held every new moon day at the temple. He cited lack of public amenities including poor hygiene and police bandobust as reasons for stopping the swing festival.
