Targeting to reduce traffic congestion and bring down air pollution, the Chennai metro has started giving cycle for rent.
To start with, the metro railway station at Ekkatuthangal has set up this with just ten cycles. For this, passengers will have to pay a deposit amount of Rs 3000 which will be refundable. There is no need to make any daily rental charge. Commuters can make use of the cycle to visit nearby places in close proximities to metro railway station. This service will be verily useful for commuters who take the metro every day.
If this scheme turns into a success, the same will be implemented in other railway stations as well. The contract for ten more cycles is also signed. At the same time, the deposit amount of Rs 3000 will be too high for the people. There are suggestions for them to practice conventional method of charging hourly rates instead of deposit amounts.
In his note about this, one of the passengers wonders how many can afford to pay this amount. They insist giving the cycle for hourly rates. Likewise, the same is to be made available at all metro stations.
Earlier, in metro stations in Bengaluru and Delhi, bikes were given for rent. However, a few such vehicles were stolen and hence, hourly charges are implemented.
