Mr. Alok Kumar Varma assumed office as the new director of the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) today (Wednesday, 1st February).
Prior to this, the outgoing Director Anil Sinha retired on 2nd December 2016. After this, Mr. Rakesh Asthana was the director-in-charge on 3rd December 2016.
Rakesh Asthana retired on 19th January 2017. Alok Varma was selected as the next CBI Director.
A committee comprising of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Supreme Court Chief Justice Kehar, and the Parliamentary Opposition Leader Mr. Mallikarjun Karge of the Congress party selected Mr. Alok Kumar Varma as the next director of CBI.
It is worth noting here that Mr. Alok Kumar Varma was the former Delhi Police Commissioner.
