In Tamil Nadu, rice ration card holders are given 20 kgs of free rice. At this juncture, the National Food Security Act was implemented in Tamil Nadu during the month of November 2016. Accordingly, all rice cardholders will be eligible for 5 kg rice per person (including a child) per month under NFSA while ensuring that the quantity given under the new system is not less than the present entitlement under Universal PDS.
Like rice, 13 thousand and 485 tonnes wheat has been obtained from central government for supply under PDS scheme. At this juncture under the NFSA, the allotment of wheat has been enhanced to 1.62 lakhs tonnes. In view of this Commissioner of Food Supply Department, Tamil Nadu has recommended to the government that wheat can be given free of cost for the rice ration card holders.
The Tamil Nadu government has accepted this recommendation. Accordingly wheat will be supplied free of cost to all rice card holders as per the existing norms. 10 kg of wheat per card will be issued to Chennai city including its belt area.
