It has been a long-term belief that eating carrots will help get rid of wearing spectacles. The belief continues and remains strong even today. What could be the reasons for this strong belief?

Vitamin A is closely linked with healthy vision. Greens, carrot, milk, egg, liver, curry leaves, coriander leaves, papaya, and mango.

Actually, the two food items that we regularly chew and discard – curry leaves and coriander leaves – are richer in vitamin A. Food items rich in Vitamin A are really helpful in the prevention of losing healthy eyesight.

Around 40 years ago, shortage of Vitamin A was a rather big issue. Children suffered from weakening/loss of vision because of the non-availability of nutrients and shortage of availability of Vitamin A. If the child was suffering from worm infection, it will not be possible to absorb the Vitamin A in the food taken. This would also lead to loss of healthy vision.

Actually, the shortage of healthy eyesight happens because of the shaping of the eyes. This cannot be rectified just by eating carrots or greens which are rich in Vitamin A. So, it is just not possible to rectify the problems pertaining the shaping of the eye by eating carrots or greens.  In a similar way, a child wearing spectacles simply cannot get rid of the spectacles just by eating carrots.
