Madras High Court has asked the State Election Commission to state the exact date in which the local body elections will be held in Tamil Nadu.
Since the tenure of the local body representatives were over, it was decided to hold elections in two phases during the month of October to elect the new representatives. DMK leader R.S Bharati filed a petition stating that reservation to Scheduled Tribe population has not been made proportionate to their population in this election. On hearing the petition Mr Justice N Kirubakaran quashed the notification and directed the SEC to issue a fresh notification and complete the election process by 30th December.
Assailing the order, the SEC moved an appeal before a Division Bench. This appeal came for enquiry last week. At this juncture Justices asked the SEC: You don’t want to conduct the elections and you don’t want to conduct the case. You are simply dragging on the case.
At this juncture the case came before a Division Bench comprising of Justices. Senior Council of the Commission B. Kumar made the submission before a Division Bench. Justices asked: Let the report be there. Tell us that when you will be conducting the elections.
B. Kumar said that classes are to be taken for election officials and in view of this the elections will be conducted by 15th May.
Justices adjourned the case by stating: You should not generally state that the elections will be conducted by 15th May. You should tell the exact date on 21st in which the election will be conducted.
Hence it is understood that the local body elections date will be known today.
