A vaccination drive against foot and mouth disease will be launched by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries. The vaccinations will be given to cattle in the State from March 1.
The drive will cover 1.90 lakh cattle in Karur district. It is aimed at controlling FMD that claimed many heads of cattle in different parts of the State in 2013.
Speaking about this, a senior government official said, The drive would aim at covering all cattle. Special teams were formed to administer vaccination. Walk-in coolers had been kept ready to enable the veterinary doctors and para medical staff members to visit various camps to administer vaccine to cattle. The department would shortly receive sufficient doses. There would be buffer stock too. Special drive would be conducted for covering migratory cattle. Authorities were asked to ensure 100 percent coverage. All line departments, including revenue, diary, village and district panchayats would be involved in the drive that would culminate on March 21. The farmers and livestock owners should use the opportunity to get their livestock vaccinated and help check the incidence of the disease. Gram sabha meetings would be held on Friday in all villages to impress upon the farmers to bring their cattle for vaccination.
