More number of lanes is likely to be introduced in plazas around Chennai, a move to cut down motorists’ waiting time by the National Highways Authority of India.

According to sources in NHAI, there are many complaints coming in regarding long waiting time more than necessary. This has enticed the authority to increase total number of lanes.

There is one more aim by the authority where motorists will switch to FasTag which is an electronic toll connection. We cannot provide separate lanes for FasTag without creating additional lanes. If users paying fees upfront using FasTag will have to wait for the same time like other users, they would not opt for the facility at all.

At Athur, there are 10 lanes, at Paranur, there are 12 lanes, at Vanagaram, 8 lanes are there and at Surapet, there are 12 lanes. At Nallur, 14 lanes are there. The official stated that the cost estimate of the project is being worked out and approval will be sought from Delhi. It may take around 2 to 3 months for the entire project to get completed.

A resident of Korattur, said he took Chennai bypass while traveling between Ambattur and Tambaram. The road is of very poor shape with a number of undulations irking people thinking why they should pay toll.
