Maha Shivaratri celebrated today

Maha Shivaratri is celebrated yearly once in dedication to Lord Shiva. Though Shivratri falls every month, the Maha Shivaratri Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha in month of Maasi is known as Maha Shivaratri.
 
Maha Shivaratri is celebrated today. On this day, Lord Shiva prayed throughout the night and got Parvathi merged with him as one half of his body. Hence Shivaratri pooja should be performed four times during the whole night.
 
On Maha Shivaratri day, the night will be  divided into four quarters, each quarter going by the name of a Jama called also Yama and pious people keep awake during every one of it , worshipping Shiva. People will great reward if they worship Lord Shiva tonight. Hence devotees will throng Lord Shiva’s temple tonight. Devotees can donate the pooja materials to the temples on this day.
 
In Chennai Maha Shivaratri is being celebrated grandly today at Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvottiyur, Mylapore Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Thiruvanmiyur Marundeeswarar Temple and Purasawakkam Purasawakkam Temple.
